Not sure why... Fresh install of 4.4 on Ubuntu 16.04 Any help would be greatly appreciated....

fetch the ".htaccess" file on your server's host as you see it now. It is probably like ".htaccess.txt". delete the ".txt" at the end and save the file as ".htaccess".
As root admin, you must give the necessary permissions to the file.

Nevermind. I'm dumb and didn't have write permissions on my data directory.
