The security issue / Doubt about having an own social media website

Vivek Ramachandran Posted in General Discussion 7 years ago

Hi there,
I am a freelance web developer. Recently I got a client who need a social media website exactly the same as Facebook. I just googled for some theme or something which can help me, and I found out this website. My question is " Is it that secured to develop a custom social media website
of my own?" Since it is open source is more pron to hacking?

Well,
before diving into another endless theoretical discussion about security by obscurity versus security by transparency I'd suggest to simply install an Ossn test site and run your own penetration tests.
There are a lot of helpful tools available at http://resources.infosecinstitute.com/14-popular-web-application-vulnerability-scanners/ for example.

Speaking for me: I never ran into any security issues with Ossn for almost 4 years.
