Is it possible to add a component to the network that allows users to sell items?

Yes it is possible however it is required to develop a component in firstplace. You can use a simple blog component (edit it) and use a paypal/stripe gateway with it.
Due to the many requests in the past for additonal features and components we have decided to develope a premium version. Features like Hashtags, Videos, Polls, Events, Stories, Link Preview, etc included in it.
