I'd like to change the Like and Comment links to icons instead of text. How can I make this happen? I'm new to OSSN and have no clue how to create components.

Do you mean the icons for upvotes and downvotes? For the Up + Down Vote Icons fnf on new Reddit, simply go to Mod Tools > Community Appearance > Posts and use 24 x 24px or 48 x 48px images.

If I alter the main file like that will it revert back after an upgrade?

You may can edit the language files OssnLike/locale/ossn.en.php and in the translation you may edit the string and use the unicode font awesome code. https://fontawesome.com/v4.7.0/icons/
