How to slow spammers down

Mick Dawlings Posted in Technical Support 1 year ago

I assume there is a component or something that can help with spammers?
We've not even advertised the site but we're getting hit hard by what seems to be bots creating useless accounts.

You know the need, I've shared it with you. You built both so please suggest which I should try.

Try the one which fits your need. Try Cloudflare or Google and see which one controls the bots

Sorry? I have not tried any, that's why I just asked you which you would suggest.

Anyhow, you mention developing some so please feel free to suggest a captcha that works with 7.2.
I'll give it a try.

Which one doesn't work? all works fine. Seems so far you haven't tried any and expects those bots control.

Next time i will tell ossn to order a KFC for me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🍔🍔🍔🍔

The accounts you shared appear to be automated AI spam, which we have also experienced.

Anyone putting anything online experiences this. That's why any good software comes with spam controls built in right out of the gate.

There is no way to control these because they are programmed to pass the captcha test.

I run tons of software that has captcha. When it's obvious that bots make it in, you change the captcha or use a new type. The ones that make it in are the lame spammers, willing to manually create accounts and get past the captcha. Those are not an issue at all compared to a bot.

It appears ludicrous to blame OSSN for this.

How am I changing your words here? You said it looks ludicrous of me to be blaming OSSN.

People are now creating spam accounts on the community to market their products.

Now that is ludicrous :). I showed you the accounts. It's 100% clear a bot is creating accounts and not to market anything :).

Server admin? To do what, run fail2ban against something that should already be controlling spammers? As you can clearly see, the user accounts are made up using different email names and account names and of course, IPs.
Spam controls are NOT at the server level, security is. The app is where spam controls need to exist.

In the end, they are just useless accounts that have to be deleted because ossn doesn't even have a way to expire those as far as I can tell otherwise, just let them get auto removed.

No one is asking you to custom code for them for free. What you get in the forums is information that lets you debug, fix, update, add features to your software to make it better.

Did I look for components? Sure I did. There is nothing what so ever under the spam category. Not really sure why it's there. I see there is a way to search now but that only comes up with years old components. No idea what will or will not work.

I'm definitely not here to argue with anyone but please do not ridicule your customers when this software is simply not as mature as the marketing makes it sound like it is. It has a long way to go and even longer because you take offence to input and feedback.

Maybe you don't like my posts but I really dislike that I've been at this for weeks now and still do not see how I can get to a point of advertising my site. SO MANY things to try to get working as I'd like to see them.
Luckily, I'll be working with a dev soon but I suspect he too will find it frustrating to ask for help here. We'll see.

Lovely, single reply had to be split into 3 parts.

To keep the replies simple to read and faster to understand we have limit of 3000 characters, and I believe it is enough for a brief and simple reply.

Mick please stop changing my words.

Then you say 'to market their products' which is a ridiculous comment considering I showed you the accounts.

Don't you see spammers here that market their products in their replies? they put a link here in reply with some funny reply? all generated by AI. I have seen those spammers that you have shared screenshot its not my first time to see those patterns.

Now i'm called being ludicrous for thinking that social software should have spam controls?

Again please stop changing my words into something I haven't said. I didn't said this to you but i said to the thing you said about bots that OSSN should have a way to control this. We already have many captcha modules 2 of them created by me and there are 2-3 others created by someone else. Why don't you use them? Now in OSSN we can not do everything there are things that your server admin need to do it for you. Like create the rules that reads the apache raw data of users and based on the data block the requests. (example mod security)

Did you used captcha component? what was the results after that? many things missing about the measures you taken to stop them. How many solutions did you looked to fight with bots and these automated spam?

Its not the job of OSSN to deal with the apache logs and then ban those requests. OSSN can not access apache logs and learn those patterns, use some APIs pass your data to them and decide if user is a spam or not. What is so hard in it? many of those APIs are paid engage with your developer to find a good API for you that can filter out users based on their signup data.

Yes, I have asked about documentation, many times but no one ever responds.

Again please don't let me repeat go to developers section of the site and find it.

That's not true either.......

So what is true man?

Is there a collective, updated doc on the main software itself.

What are you looking for a single PDF file for everything is this what you are looking for?

I have something more technical or 'how do I' question, I post here in the forums. Most of the time, you guys answer with usable information and the rest of the time, try to downplay any ideas being suggested that could help improve your software.

Thanks for confirmation, there is a difference between posting ideas and asking help or asking for documentation for development. Most of your discussions are for ideas, what do you want us to do with it? we can simply keep them in list and in future if possible we implement it but can not do it right away. Do you want us to code for you right away or write a code for you in the replies for whole idea?

Please share the URLs of the discussions you posted in which you asked for help about development or asked for documentation about certain development part and we answered you with usable information. Please must share those URLs so we can look.

Lastly again, you are changing my words into something I haven't said and if something that is not present in OSSN please don't start attacking or start a war instead find a way to achieve it. You need to understand everything have limitation and we can not provide everything inside OSSN.
